ISO 45001:2018 outlines requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, to enable an organization to control its OH&S risks and improve its performance. ISO-45001:2018 is a new International Standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, with guidance for its use, to enable an organization to proactively improve its OH&S performance in preventing injury and ill-health. ISO-45001:2018 is intended to be applicable to any organization regardless of its size, type and nature. ISO-45001:2018 enables an organization, through its OH&S management system, to integrate other aspects of health and safety, such as worker wellness/well-being; however, it should be noted that an organization can be required by applicable legal requirements to also address such issues.
Integrated ISO-14001:2015 (EMS) & ISO-45001:2018 (OH&S) Management Systems
ISO-45001:2018 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems was intentionally developed to be compatible with the ISO-9001:2015 (QMS) and ISO-14001:2015 (EMS) management systems standards for easier integration of quality, environmental and occupational health & safety management systems by organizations.
Occupational health and safety management systems are used in conjunction with environmental management systems. This is because ISO 14001:2015 – Environmental management systems – Requirements with guidance for use and OHSAS-18001:2007, which has served as the primary framework for an occupational health and safety management system prior to the release of ISO-45001:2018, while varying greatly in purpose, are highly comparable in terms of primary elements like policies, objectives, and preventive action.
